ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 204:
Description
This impressive early glass bead from Java is crafted using the marvering technique, producing striking swirling patterns in deep cobalt blue, warm brown, and ivory-toned glass. The bead’s substantial ovoid form is decorated with meticulously applied trails that have been fused and smoothed into the surface, creating a dynamic, flowing design characteristic of Southeast Asian glass production during this period. The central perforation is wide and well-defined, showing wear consistent with ancient use. Areas of iridescence and mineral accretion add to its archaeological charm. Large beads of this type were valued both as adornments and as prestige trade items across the Indonesian archipelago. This example stands out for its bold coloration, excellent preservation, and impressive visual presence.
