ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 203:
Description
This exceptional spherical silver pendant is richly decorated with finely executed niello inlay and applied gold medallions, exemplifying the luxurious metalwork of the Persian Seljuk period. The surface is arranged in a series of circular panels, each containing expressive figural and avian motifs rendered in low relief and highlighted with parcel gilding. Delicately incised scrolls and dark niello detailing fill the spaces between the medallions, creating a striking contrast against the softly patinated silver ground.
The upper section features a robust suspension loop and an angled tubular element, likely part of the original attachment mechanism for wear or ritual use. Traces of green patination attest to its antiquity and add depth to its surface. Objects of this intricacy and scale, combining niello, gilding, and engraving, are rare survivals of Seljuk decorative arts. This pendant is a distinguished example, showcasing the refined craftsmanship and aesthetic sophistication of metalworkers in 12th–13th century Persia.
