ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 194:
Description
This finely hand-formed early Islamic clay bowl, likely originating from Persia, is crafted from sun-dried earthenware and decorated with a band of flowing calligraphic motifs around the exterior. The vessel displays an appealingly irregular rim and a warm, naturally aged surface showing mineral deposits and earthen patination consistent with significant antiquity. The interior retains its original rough texture, while the base is shaped with a small, slightly recessed circular foot.
The incised calligraphy—now softened by time—encircles the bowl in an elegant, rhythmic pattern typical of early Islamic decorative traditions, suggesting a ceremonial or domestic function. Its tactile, organic form and understated ornamentation reflect the aesthetic values of the period, making it an evocative and authentic piece of early Islamic material culture.
