A finely executed and richly illuminated Persian calligraphy panel, signed by Muhammad Hussain, likely produced in Shiraz during the 19th century. This elegant work exemplifies the refined artistry of Qajar-period illumination and the mastery of the nasta‘liq script, the quintessential Persian calligraphic hand.
The composition features flowing diagonal lines of large, confident black script written on a densely gilded floral ground adorned with delicate polychrome blossoms in pink, blue, and green. The text is framed by a striking border of gold outlined with blue, red, and green floral motifs, enclosed within a series of fine gilt and colored rules. The upper section includes a floral headpiece (sarloh), richly embellished with gold and blue ornamentation.
An inscription cartouche at the top identifies the scribe as “katib: Muhammad Hussain”, confirming authorship. The work’s fine balance of composition, illumination, and calligraphy exemplifies the high aesthetic standards of Qajar Shiraz workshops, known for producing exquisite album leaves (muraqqa‘).
Mounted on a later reddish-brown card.
