ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 171:
Description
This highly unusual bronze ewer is an exceptional example of sculptural metalwork from the Indian subcontinent, dating to the 16th–17th century. Cast in a striking openwork form, the vessel incorporates a bold interlaced knot motif at its centre, forming the “body” of the ewer and giving it its distinctive anthropomorphic presence. The composition is crowned by a tall, flaring neck rising from the central knot, set upon a slender trumpet foot.
Two elegant, sinuous elements extend from the central body—one forming the curved spout with a stylised creature’s head, the other an arched handle that meets the rim of the neck. At the top of the interlace are a pair of finely modelled birds, perched symmetrically on either side, adding refinement and symbolic charm to the design.
