ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 163:
Description
This elegant slip-painted bowl exemplifies the refined aesthetics of Samanid-period ceramics. The interior is decorated with a series of bold, stylized red and black abstract motifs arranged in a rhythmic pattern around the walls, set against a pale cream slip ground. The design radiates outward from the gently rounded central well, creating a balanced and harmonious composition typical of early Islamic pottery. The exterior shows traces of original pigment and surface burial accretions, consistent with its age and archaeological origin. With its restrained palette, strong graphic elements, and well-preserved form, this bowl represents an excellent example of the artistic innovation found in 10th-century Central Asian ceramic workshops. A desirable piece for collectors of early Islamic art and Samanid pottery.
