Lot 16:
Description
A splendid Ottoman Qur’an manuscript, richly illuminated and executed with exceptional precision and artistry, dated 1251 AH (1835–1836 CE).
The manuscript opens with a magnificent double-page frontispiece lavishly decorated in gold and deep cobalt blue, featuring dense floral arabesques and intricate geometric panels surrounding the sacred text. The illumination is enhanced with delicate red and green detailing, exemplifying the refined aesthetic of 19th-century Ottoman Qur’anic manuscripts.
The text is written in a fine naskh script in black ink, with verse markers in gold and red, and surah headings highlighted within gilded panels. Each page is elegantly framed in red and gold rulings. The manuscript exhibits the balanced calligraphic style and delicate ornamentation typical of Qur’ans produced under Ottoman patronage in the mid-19th century.
The volume retains its original Ottoman binding of deep red tooled leather, with a central medallion and gilt border decorations, and marbled and block-printed endpapers.
A fine and complete example of the Ottoman Qur’anic manuscript tradition, this Qur’an reflects both spiritual devotion and artistic mastery from the period of Sultan Mahmud II’s later reign.
