Lot 151:
Description
This carved black stone bust depicts a stylized male figure wearing a traditional nemes-style headdress, rendered with serene, almond-shaped eyes, a defined nose, and a gentle, composed expression. The headdress features incised ribbing along the sides, and a central band with a raised element suggestive of a royal or symbolic ornament. The sculptor has shaped the head and shoulders with smooth, rounded contours, while leaving the underside roughly hewn, consistent with an object broken or separated from a larger sculpture.
The surface shows an appealing mottled dark patina with scattered mineral inclusions and age-related wear, giving the piece a sense of antiquity and presence. The back is simply formed, and the base retains a rough, unworked finish.
