ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 147:
Description
A finely executed Persian zodiac miniature painting, attributed to the Safavid tradition and dating to the 18th century. The composition centres on an elaborate circular zodiac wheel, richly decorated with vibrant pigments and intricate detailing. Each of the twelve zodiac signs is depicted within individual medallions, rendered in bold colours and accompanied by elegant naskh inscriptions. A radiant central figure sits enthroned within the inner circle, surrounded by ornate scrolling motifs in gold and blue.
Above the wheel appears a celestial being with golden wings—possibly an angel or astral spirit—while below, a stylised bull supports the structure, symbolising cosmic order. The entire scene is framed by a deep blue border filled with finely painted gilt floral designs, characteristic of Safavid manuscript illumination.
Presented in a later frame, the painting retains strong colours with areas of age-related wear consistent with its period. A striking and sophisticated example of Safavid astrological imagery, it would make a compelling addition to any collection of Persian manuscripts or Islamic art.
