ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 132:
Description
Of deep rounded form, this rare and finely engraved brass magic bowl is densely covered inside and out with intricate inscriptions, talismanic symbols, and astrological figures. The interior features concentric bands of Arabic inscriptions surrounding a central square filled with magical numerals and invocations, encircled by roundels containing zodiacal and animal motifs. These elaborate designs were believed to confer healing, protection, and divinatory powers.
The exterior is engraved with further inscriptions, including Qur’anic verses and protective symbols, with a prominent six-pointed star enclosing additional talismanic script at the centre. The dense and precise engraving, combined with the bowl’s form and iconography, reflects the learned craftsmanship of Mamluk metalworkers and the syncretic traditions of Islamic occult sciences during the 14th century.
