Description

A substantial and finely engraved brass astrolabe from Qajar Persia, dating to the 19th century. The instrument comprises a large mater fitted with multiple interchangeable plates (ṭabaqāt), each meticulously inscribed with astronomical scales, stereographic projections, and geographic coordinates. The rete is beautifully pierced with interlacing scrollwork, its star pointers delicately shaped and arranged around a central throne. The alidade is engraved with precise sighting lines and geometric motifs, and the original suspension ring and related fittings accompany the piece.

The mater is richly decorated with incised calligraphic cartouches, arabesques, and geometric borders, typical of Qajar metalwork. The reverse displays further astronomical markings, including altitude and azimuth circles, as well as calendrical and zodiacal notations. The overall surface shows a warm patina from age and handling, enhancing the visual depth of the engraved designs.

This impressive instrument reflects the long-standing Persian tradition of astronomical craftsmanship, combining scientific precision with artistic refinement. An important and visually striking example, it is highly desirable for collectors of Islamic scientific instruments and Qajar metalwork.
