Description

A finely engraved Persian brass horary quadrant of rare form, dated 1219 AH (1804–05 AD). The front face is intricately inscribed with finely detailed astronomical and mathematical notations, including grids and curves for determining the time of day from the sun’s altitude, along with engraved Arabic inscriptions and scales. The reverse bears a similar arrangement of engraved tables and calibrations for trigonometric and astronomical calculations.

Retaining three suspension rings for alignment, the quadrant demonstrates the high level of scientific craftsmanship and mathematical understanding characteristic of Persian instrument makers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The surface exhibits a naturally aged patina with traces of verdigris consistent with its age and use.
