ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 105:
Description
This finely potted and richly decorated ewer is an accomplished 19th-century homage to the celebrated Iznik ceramics of Ottoman Turkey, produced in the workshops of Samson in Paris. Of elegant bulbous form with a tall flaring neck, sweeping spout, and arched handle, the vessel is fitted with a hinged metal lid, echoing Ottoman prototypes.
The body is painted in a vibrant palette of turquoise, cobalt blue, sage green, bole red, and black outlines, characteristic of the Iznik “quatre-couleurs” style. Each side features cartouches containing figural and architectural motifs—such as standing courtiers, floral sprays, and stylised pavilion scenes—framed by scrolling foliage that continues across the neck, handle, and foot. The domed lid is similarly decorated with floral motifs and surmounted by a knop.
The underside bears period labels, including Made in France, affirming its Samson manufacture. Minor wear to the glaze, light crazing, and small firing imperfections are consistent with age and production.
An attractive and skilfully executed example of 19th-century European reinterpretation of Ottoman ceramics, demonstrating the enduring influence of Iznik design on Western artisans.
