Description

An exceptionally rare and early manuscript of the renowned Qur’anic exegesis Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Azim by the eminent scholar Ibn Kathir (d. 774 AH / 1373 CE). This volume—number seven in the complete series—covers the commentary from Surat Qaf to Surat al-Nas, the final chapters of the Qur’an.

Beautifully written in clear Arabic script with sections and chapter titles elegantly inscribed in red ink, this manuscript exemplifies the meticulous calligraphic traditions of the Ottoman and early post-classical Islamic period. The scribe, ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Wazzan al-Baghdadi, identifies himself within the text, suggesting a provenance linked to Baghdad’s scholarly milieu.

The manuscript is complete within this volume, consisting of numerous leaves of laid paper with text in black and red ink, bound in its original or early leather-backed boards. Natural age toning, minor stains, and signs of handling attest to its centuries of use and preservation.

A fine and significant example of early Qur’anic commentary, this manuscript represents an important piece of Islamic intellectual history and manuscript tradition.
