ISLAMIC, INDIAN & ANCIENT ART
Lot 186:
Description
The central scene shows the iconic shrine with its gilded dome and colonnaded base, executed in shimmering mother-of-pearl tesserae set against a richly iridescent abalone shell ground. The radiating effect of the nacre enhances the sanctity and grandeur of the monument, one of Islam’s holiest sites. Surrounding the depiction is an inscriptional band in elegant Arabic calligraphy, finely incised and inlaid in black against the pearlescent field. The inscriptions include religious invocations, Qur’anic verses, and blessings, underscoring the devotional character of the work.
