ISLAMIC, INDIAN & ANCIENT ART
Lot 172:
Description
The composition depicts three elegantly attired women at the riverside, engaged in bathing. Two figures are seated upon the grassy bank, partially draped in pale garments, their long black tresses cascading over their shoulders, while a third woman stands behind them, holding a yellow patterned veil to shield her companions. Small vessels and unguent pots are scattered in the foreground near the water’s edge, suggesting ritual ablution or toilette. The background is formed of gently rolling green hills set against a bright blue sky with flowering trees, the landscape rendered with simplicity yet heightened in effect by the vivid contrasts of colour.
