ISLAMIC, INDIAN & ANCIENT ART
Lot 17:
Description
An Ethiopian Christian prayer scroll, written on vellum in Ge’ez, the ancient liturgical language of Ethiopia. Produced between the 18th and 19th centuries, such scrolls were traditionally created as protective talismans, commissioned to safeguard their owners from illness, misfortune, and spiritual harm. This example is richly illustrated with vivid painted depictions of saints and protective figures, rendered in the distinctive Ethiopian style with bold outlines and expressive faces. The scroll contains alternating passages of black and red ink, the red highlighting key invocations, names, and sacred formulas. Geometric and patterned borders further embellish the text and images.
