Description

Of cylindrical form, the container is fashioned from a single length of bamboo, its surface finely incised with detailed architectural and urban scenes. Rows of houses, mosques, and minarets are depicted with precision, interspersed with ships and riverine motifs, suggesting a panoramic cityscape. Geometric and foliate borders frame the composition at either end, the base and rim reinforced with patterned bands of crosshatching and chevron designs. The warm honey tone of the bamboo accentuates the delicate linework. Such document holders were prized in the Ottoman provinces, and this example, attributed to Hamouda bin al-Haj in 19th-century Algeria, illustrates the refined craftsmanship and narrative decoration associated with regional workshop traditions.
