ISLAMIC, INDIAN & ANCIENT ART
Lot 116:
Description
Of rounded baluster form with a wide mouth and slightly everted rim, this incense burner is finely decorated with silver inlay set against a darkened ground. The body is arranged in registers of cusped medallions, each enclosing courtly and narrative scenes: seated figures, musicians, attendants, and mythical beings, all framed within scrolling foliate surrounds. The upper band is pierced with arabesques interspersed with silver-inlaid palmettes and animal motifs, allowing the scented smoke to escape when in use.
