ANTIQUITIES AND ISLAMIC ART SALE
Lot 65:
Description
A beautifully carved representation of a recumbent cow sculpted from translucent smoky quartz, dating to the Persian Achaemenid period, circa 500 B.C. This compact yet powerful figure is rendered with a serene presence, the animal depicted in a natural resting pose with limbs tucked beneath the body and the head turned slightly to one side.
The artisan has skillfully used the inherent properties of the smoky quartz to enhance the lifelike volume and surface play, exploiting subtle tonal variations and internal clouding within the stone. The cow’s expressive face features delicately incised eyes, a prominent snout, and gently curved horns. Fine detailing is visible in the musculature of the shoulders and flanks, with smooth, polished surfaces contrasting areas of more defined carving.
