Description

A finely carved Roman pendant fragment in translucent chalcedony agate, dating from the 1st to 2nd century A.D., depicting a male and female figure in a tender, intimate gesture. Likely functioning as a fide amulet—an object symbolising loyalty, love, or marital fidelity—this small but evocative piece once served as a deeply personal token, perhaps worn or carried close to the body.

The figures, despite partial loss to the upper section, are clearly shown in a frontal pose with draped garments rendered in delicate low relief. The man appears to gently clasp the woman’s hand or wrist, and the soft modeling of their forms suggests emotional connection and classical restraint. The panel is rectangular, with one side and the top broken away, likely from its original setting or frame.

The reverse is smoothly finished and slightly translucent, with visible internal banding characteristic of high-quality chalcedony agate.
