Description

A rare and exceptionally well-preserved Egyptian figure carved from translucent rock crystal, depicting a young female swimmer in a dynamic prone pose. Originating from the New Kingdom period, this captivating piece dates to circa 1400–1300 B.C. The figure is shown fully outstretched, arms extended forward as she clasps a duck-shaped float—an iconic motif associated with leisure and river life along the Nile.

The sculptor masterfully utilized the natural translucency and veining of the rock crystal to bring lifelike qualities to the figure. Delicate facial features, a rounded coiffure, and anatomically rendered limbs are clearly defined despite the material’s challenging medium. The arms are slightly separated from the torso, with careful attention given to the curvature of the swimmer’s form and the tension in her limbs, suggesting movement and buoyancy.

The duck float is equally detailed, with incised wings and a finely shaped head, exuding a sense of serenity and control. Light surface deposits and traces of ancient wear attest to the piece’s antiquity while enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
