ANTIQUITIES AND ISLAMIC ART SALE
Lot 213:
Description
This 18th-century huqqa (hookah) mouthpiece is exquisitely carved from a single piece of mottled green nephrite jade, a material highly prized in the Islamic world for its durability and aesthetic qualities. The tapered cylindrical form is both elegant and functional, embodying the refined taste of the Ottoman elite.
What sets this piece apart is its intricate inlay of gold floral motifs, meticulously engraved and inlaid directly into the jade surface. Scattered among the gold stems and blossoms are inset cabochon rubies, adding vibrant points of color and opulence. The motifs are characteristic of Ottoman decorative design, reflecting influences from both Persian and local floral aesthetics.
