Description

An exceptional and uncommonly rare kashkul (dervish begging bowl), carved from a single piece of stone, likely dating to the early Islamic period. This striking piece features a gracefully curved crescent form — a signature shape of Sufi devotional vessels — and displays a rich patina from age and use.

The surface is intricately incised with vegetal scrolls and flowing Arabic calligraphy, likely containing invocations, blessings, or Qur’anic verses. These embellishments are carefully composed within horizontal bands that wrap around the vessel, enhancing its spiritual and visual impact.

A prominent decorative feature includes two finely modeled animal head terminals, possibly lions or other symbolic creatures, which serve as anchors for the original leather suspension cord, remarkably still present. The form evokes a strong symbolic presence, with the animal motifs adding protection or strength to the spiritual nature of the object.

Both faces of the bowl are adorned with a rosette-like medallion, centrally placed and raised in slight relief, providing a visual focal point and possibly serving a ritual or symbolic function.
