ANTIQUITIES AND ISLAMIC ART SALE
Lot 184:
Description
An exquisitely detailed rectangular brass tray, finely engraved with a majestic courtly scene believed to depict Shah Abbas I surrounded by courtiers, musicians, and attendants. This rare and opulent piece likely originates from the Zand or early Qajar dynasty of 19th-century Persian.
At the center of the composition is a densely populated medallion showing a formal gathering at court, replete with enthroned figures, attendants in courtly garb, and entertainers — all intricately detailed and symmetrically arranged. The scene is framed by elaborate arabesques and scrolling vegetal motifs that extend throughout the tray’s border.
The outer band is further adorned with charming narrative vignettes: dancing figures, musicians, scholars, and possibly scenes from classical Persian literature. The edge is enclosed by a floral and vine motif in fine engraving, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. The iconography and layout are strongly evocative of Persian miniature painting traditions, adapted into the medium of metalwork.
