ANTIQUITIES AND ISLAMIC ART SALE
Lot 149:
Description
This finely crafted Mamluk brass basin dates to the reign of Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay (r. 1468–1496), one of the most prominent sultans of the Burji Mamluk dynasty. A rare and important survivor of late 15th-century Islamic metalwork, the basin exhibits an exceptional level of artistry and craftsmanship associated with the high point of Mamluk decorative arts.
The rounded body is masterfully engraved with interlaced arabesques, geometric cartouches, and intricate bands of calligraphy, all harmoniously distributed across the surface. The inscriptions likely include honorific titles and Quranic references, which were common on ceremonial and functional objects of this nature.
The interior bears a central medallion with concentric inscriptions and vegetal motifs, while the base is fully adorned with a tightly interlaced pattern—demonstrating the Mamluk emphasis on dense, almost architectural ornamentation. The brass has acquired a rich, dark patina, enhancing the contrast of the engraving and reflecting its age and authenticity.
