ANTIQUITIES AND ISLAMIC ART SALE
Lot 146:
Description
An outstanding example of Qajar-period metalwork, this finely crafted openwork lantern is made from brass and dates to 19th-century Iran. The form is bold and architectural, featuring a bulbous body, tapering neck, flared rim, and pointed finial, all raised on a single rounded foot.
The surface is richly decorated with intricate openwork arabesques and pierced geometric motifs, creating a dynamic play of light when illuminated. Encircling the body and neck are medallions containing finely engraved portraits—highly stylized depictions of ancient Persian kings and nobles, identifiable by their regal headdresses and courtly attire. These busts are framed by floral cartouches and framed within lobed medallions, evoking earlier Safavid artistic traditions while embodying the romantic nationalism of the Qajar era.
