Description
This exquisite and rare Ottoman Quran manuscript is a fine example of 19th-century Turkish Islamic artistry. Signed by the scribe Haji Mohammed Yakshjam and dated 1257 Hijri (1841 AD), the manuscript is notable for its high-quality illumination, meticulous calligraphy, and excellent state of preservation.
Each of the 15 pages is lavishly illuminated with dense and intricate floral and geometric patterns in brilliant gold and rich pigments, harmoniously framed with red and black ink borders. The use of gold throughout the text highlights the sacredness of the content and demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship. The script is a refined Ottoman naskh, penned in black ink with red vocalization marks and embellishments, maintaining superb legibility and stylistic precision.
The manuscript opens with an ornate double-page frontispiece in gold and polychrome, showcasing symmetrical arabesque and floral motifs surrounding the text, making a powerful visual impact. Subsequent pages maintain the same opulence, with extensive gold ground and marginal rosettes marking verse separations.
The manuscript is bound in its original gilt leather binding, decorated with embossed floral and geometric motifs on both covers and the flap, reflecting the grandeur of the Ottoman book arts tradition.
