Description

A MONUMENTAL HIZAM FROM THE HOLY KAABA IN MECCA, OTTOMAN TURKEY, 20TH CENTURY

The Hizam, or belt, is an inscribed band that traditionally encircles the upper part of the Kaaba. Rectangular in form, it is woven from green silk and embroidered with Qur’anic inscriptions in gilt thread, the surface organised into alternating cartouches and medallions of various shapes and sizes.

The central section features a repeated inscription of Qur’anic verses in elegant thuluth script, framed by circular medallions similarly enclosing Qur’anic passages. The upper and lower borders are further decorated with additional Qur’anic quotations and invocations, some rendered in thuluth, others in bold Kufic script, framed by decorative bands.
